Driftprotocol: DFX sale and redemption

Drift Protocol’s DFX recovery token can be sold at a secondary-market price or redeemed for a proportional USDT payout from the recovery pool. Compare the proceeds for the same DFX quantity: selling transfers the recovery claim to the buyer, while redemption burns the tokens and ends the claim attached to them.

The original Drift program is paused following the April 1, 2026 exploit. DFX is a transferable SPL token on Solana, separate from the DRIFT governance token. Any wallet holding DFX can redeem under the DFX terms.

Compare the sale quote with the pool payout

Drift’s October 1, 2026 announcement, DFX Claims and Redemptions are now open , set initial allocations at one DFX per verified USDT of loss. That allocation records the loss; the amount received from selling or redeeming depends on the chosen route.

Comparison Sell DFX Redeem DFX
Proceeds The executable market quote for the quantity sold. DFX is tradable on secondary markets such as Raydium. USDT calculated as the DFX quantity multiplied by Recovery Pool Balance divided by Outstanding DFX Supply.
Token treatment The tokens transfer to another holder and remain outstanding. The redeemed tokens are permanently burned.
Later pool deposits The recovery claim follows the transferred tokens to their new holder. The burned tokens have no further claim. Any DFX retained keeps its proportional claim under the DFX terms.

For a sale, use the quote for the full quantity, including any quoted trading charges. If the proceeds are quoted in another asset, express their value in USDT for the comparison. Account for the applicable network costs separately.

Redemption burns DFX and pays USDT in the same transaction: both complete, or neither does. Completed redemptions are final, and the payout rounds down to the nearest 0.000001 USDT. Check the quoted Receive Amount alongside the per-token Redemption Amount; one is the total payout, and the other is the rate used to calculate it.

A sale quote above the redemption payout

In this hypothetical comparison, the sale quote is worth more immediately than redemption. The hypothetical inputs are: DFX quantity: 2437 DFX; recovery pool balance: 3,840,000 USDT; outstanding supply: 256,000,000 DFX; sale quote for the same quantity, valued in USDT after trading charges: 38.992 USDT. This comparison excludes Solana network costs.

The pool’s per-token rate is 3840000 / 256000000 = 0.015 USDT per DFX. The redemption payout is 2437 * 0.015 = 36.555 USDT. The hypothetical sale quote exceeds that payout by 38.992 - 36.555 = 2.437 USDT before network costs.

The difference holds only if the sale executes for the assumed proceeds and the pool balance and outstanding supply remain as assumed. Different network costs can change the net comparison. A lower sale quote could favor redemption; a larger pool balance with the same outstanding supply would increase the redemption payout.

What holding DFX preserves

Keeping DFX preserves its share of later recovery funding. A partial sale or redemption leaves that exposure attached only to the tokens retained. Other holders’ redemptions withdraw USDT while reducing DFX supply proportionally. They add no new funding to the pool, and fewer tokens remain to share later deposits.

The October 1, 2026 announcement schedules contributions from a share of Velocity’s Net Protocol Revenue each day at 00:00 UTC and directs recovered funds into the pool. Revenue contributions end once cumulative deposits reach the full amount of verified losses. The announcement also lists commitments of up to 127.5 million USDT from Tether and up to 20 million USDT from strategic partners. A commitment must be distinguished from USDT already deposited in the pool. The timing and amount of a later payout depend on actual funding and the supply still outstanding.

The approximately 0.0104 USDT per DFX described for launch was a dated redemption figure. It does not establish a present sale price or redemption quote.

Before you start with Driftprotocol

Which wallet is needed to claim an initial DFX allocation?

Use the wallet that controlled your Drift account on April 1, 2026. The verified loss snapshot fixes the allocation, and claiming requires accepting the DFX terms and keeping a small amount of SOL for the network fee. The published claim window closes at 00:00 UTC on January 1, 2028; DFX left unclaimed at that deadline will be permanently burned. Later redemption can use any wallet holding DFX under the DFX terms.

Is the Insurance Fund claim part of DFX redemption?

The Insurance Fund claim is separate from DFX and has its own terms.
